World Book Day
Year 5 had a fantastic day dressed as their favourite book characters and enjoyed a clue hunt to solve the mystery of the missing Gingerbread Man! They looked closely at the story of Hansel and Gretel and considered the witch's side of the story before taking a role in a court hearing to decide who was actually the guilty party and what the truth of the matter may have been. After hearing from all involved parties and woodland witnesses, the decision was made that Hansel and Gretel were, in fact, vandals and trespassers and their parents needed a educational course to improve their parenting skills. The witch was found to be NOT GUILTY!
Learning Celebration
Year 5 shared their learning about 'Natural Disasters' and made volcanoes with their parents and carers.
Loudmouth Personal Safety Workshop
Year 5 and 6 took part in a personal safety workshop with the Loudmouth performance group. They heard important messages about how they can keep themselves safe and who they can go to for support. They discussed Early Warning Signs and that they are in charge of their bodies and personal boundaries. The Loudmouth performers played some difficult situations and the children discussed how the characters could have sought help or acted differently.
Area Indoor Athletics
Selected students from Y5 and Y6 took part in the area indoor athletics competition along with lots of other schools. They competed in individual and team track and field events such as relay, speed bounce, standing long jump and javelin. All the children performed brilliantly and had lots of fun. It was lovely to see how supportive they were of each other and how well they demonstrated all our school values.
National Space Centre Trip
Year 5 enjoyed an inspiring day at the National Space Centre on Friday 31st January, exploring real spacecraft, learning about life as an astronaut and discovering the wonders of our solar system through hands‑on exhibits and an immersive planetarium show.
Young Voices 2026!
Year 5 and the choir members in Y6 had a fantastic time at the BP Pulse Arena in Birmingham on 26th January. They sang their hearts out and danced the night away. I was so impressed with their behaviour, enthusiasm and energy! They have been working on learning the songs and dances since September, and we really enjoyed our concert day.
Learning Celebration
Year 5 invited parents and carers to share some of their learning. They performed two songs from their upcoming Young Voices concert and presented their learning about the Maya civilisation. They then completed a 'fact hunt' to learn more about Maya writing before sharing their books.
Anti-bullying 'Odd Sock' day
Year 5 wore odd socks to celebrate difference as part of anti-bullying week. They took part in some fun activities and learnt about using their power for good!
Autobiographies - English
In English this week Y5 have written autobiographies and I have loved finding out all about them! As part of the school's focus on oracy, we ended the week with paired interviews where children asked each other open-ended questions such as 'What superpower would you choose and why?' to find out more about their classmates. We had to listen carefully to the answers.
Cooking - Group B
Children used sieving and kneading skills to make cheese scones. Yum!
Children's Forest - Group B
We had a fantastic day at in Tallis Wood learning about the Children's Fire and the rewilding project. We played games and practised out fire lighting skills before heading to the Children's Forest for a spot of poetry writing and of course, a game of the famous 'Sink and Fade'! The children used charcoal from the fire to make themselves camouflaged
World Mental Health Day
Y5 completed wellbeing activities to mark World Mental Health Day.
Children's Forest Group A
Half of Y5 had a fantastic day at the Children's Forest. They listened to Aggie explain all about the purpose and origin of the forest and the 'Children's Fire'. Games, fire lighting and den building took up the morning in the woods, while the afternoon was spent playing 'Sink and Fade', enjoying the huge swing and drawing the trees.
Botanical Gardens Trip
Year 5 had a great time at The Botanical Gardens in Birmingham as part of their theme learning about the rainforest. They had a 'Rainforest Challenge' where children hunted for plants to match the clues and a 'Rainforest Fun' session where they found out about the animals of the rainforest. The children listened brilliantly and asked some fantastic questions. Children had the opportunity to touch or hold stick insects, a giant snail, bearded dragon and a snake! Even those that were a little nervous challenged themselves. Well done year 5!
Week one in Y5!
We have had a great week and the children have settled brilliantly into their new routines. We have been doing lots of grammar work this week and have started maths learning with lessons on place value. We have begun our theme of Rainforests and The Maya and enjoyed looking at Maya art and responding to it in our sketchbooks. I have been really impressed with the mature behaviour and focus on learning, even during a very competitive game of dodgeball in PE.
