Mr Andrews, Mrs Hart and Mrs Skipper
On Friday 27th May, we celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee! We had lots of fun with our Jubilee arts and crafts. Each class in the school also learnt about a decade the Queen has reigned over and we found out all about the 90s! We presented our facts in a whole school assembly and even performed the macarena!
Year 2 wanted to say a massive thank you to the lovely Mr Redwood for the amazing help and support he has been since January. He has worked so incredibly hard and the children have thoroughly loved working with him over the last few months. We are all going to really miss him and wish him the best of luck in his next school!
Thank you so much for your help with Year 2's Learning Celebration! It was so lovely to finally welcome lots of parents and carers back into school and the children really enjoyed sharing our learning about 'Around the World'. Please find a copy of the PowerPoint presentation used in the session below. The quiz is at the end - I know lots of Year 2 wanted to test their parents/carers. Good luck!
All the children will be learning about 'Protective Behaviours' in four PHSE lessons this week.

Year 2 took part in the school danceathon to raise money for Comic Relief. We had lots of fun and had some fabulous dance moves. We're levitating!
This week, we have been testing air resistance using a simple test. We made a prediction about which material would take the longest to fall and which would take the shortest amount of time to fall. The objects we investigated were: a leaf, plain paper, a ball of paper, a pen and a tissue. We had lots of fun!
As part of our Theme, Year 2 have been incredibly lucky to receive a visit from Liz and Devinder to bring Indian culture to life! We had a fantastic day and learnt so much about the wonderful country of India. We explored some Indian clothes; including putting on a sari, and we also saw what the dhol drum is used for. We even did some Bhangra dancing, learning some simple Bhangra choreography to recorded music. We also enjoyed an Indian folktale and a very exciting (but noisy!) special game played by children in India. It was such a great day!
To raise money for 'Save the Children', we wore Christmas jumpers and donated some money. We loved wearing our Christmas jumpers all day!
As part of our Carbon Monoxide awareness, Year 2 have been learning about how to keep themselves and other people safe from Carbon Monoxide. We even got our own goodie bags which included our very own CO monitor to take home!
As part of our writing unit for this week, Year 2 have been exploring poetry relating to Remembrance Day. We looked at a poem called 'Where the Poppies Now Grow', practised performing it and even wrote our own poems. Here you can read some of our wonderful work. We hope you enjoy!
As part of our Science topic 'Animals including humans' we had our very first school trip to Hatton Country World! We learnt so much about how to care for animals and what all animals need in order to survive. We also tested our knowledge from what we have learnt in school about animals and their offspring and managed to enhance our understanding during the trip. We really enjoyed feeding the animals, holding the animals and even going on a tractor ride! You can see our lovely photos below.
Year 2 have been learning all about rights and responsibilities in their masterclass afternoons! They have thought about the importance of responsibilities in school and at home, and have thought about why we have different rules in school to keep us safe.
Year 2 have been working really hard on their place value skills and have investigated our number facts to 10, 20 and applied this understanding to our number facts to 100! We worked really hard in our learning partners to investigate how many different number bonds to 100 we could make - it was lots of fun!
Year 2 had a wonderful day thinking about the good news that Jesus brings to Christians. We also thought about why Jesus had disciples, to spread his good news and performed some wonderful drama linked to a Bible story called 'Jesus calls Matthew'. We found that Jesus is a friend to all and forgiveness is a really important value to share. You can see some of our photos below!
We have all had a lovely first week in Year 2 and have started to learn about this term's theme of 'Fire and Light'. It has been wonderful to see so many excited faces, eager to begin the school year with such enthusiasm and positivity!
PE - this will be on a Monday and a Tuesday. Please leave PE kits in school and they will be sent home each half term for a wash.
Reading - we will read everyday as a whole class and each child will read individually at least once a week. Please ensure that your child has their book and diary in school everyday. 15 minutes of daily practise at home will also be a great benefit to your child's progress. Reading books and a reading record will be sent home on Monday and will remain at home until Friday. On Friday, these will be collected in and will be given back on the following Monday.
Spellings - will be uploaded onto the class page of the school website on a Friday (beginning Friday 10th September) and there will be a test the following Friday. Please spend time helping your child to learn these spellings ready for the test. Children will record their test in a book at school however this will no longer be sent home.
Maths – will be given out on a Friday to be returned by the following Friday. Each child will be provided with a photocopied sheet for their homework. The homework encompasses a range of mathematical skills and is valuable in ensuring that the children practise these skills on a weekly basis. In Year 2, the sheets will be handed out on a Friday (beginning 10th September) and will be returned to school the following Friday.
Please see what else we are learning this term in the 'termly plans' folder on our class page.
Thank you for your continued support and if you have any questions, please get in touch via the office.
