Song of Sounds Phonics

In Reception we use a phonics scheme called Song of Sounds. We have a phonics lesson every day where we learn the skills we need to help us read and write.

A parent guide can be found by copying and pasting the link, you will find useful information explaining what phonics is, how we teach it in Reception and how you can help at home.

The Zones of Regulation

We use the Zones of Regulation to help us to identify and name our feelings. We also begin to learn the important skill of self regulation so that we can start to manage our own feelings.

Reception have been learning all about feelings, we have given different groups of feelings zones which are listed above. We have been learning to recognise different feelings and to understand that all feelings are ok.

We then talked about how to help ourselves regulate, feel ok and get back into the green zone. We shared our ideas

  • Play with Lego
  • Have a cuddle
  • Look at a story
  • Watch TV
  • Take deep breaths
  • Do yoga
  • Go for a walk (with a grown up!)
  • Be alone to calm down
  • Talk to a grown up
  • Have a rest
  • Exercise
  • Have a snack or drink
  • Draw a picture

Ice ornaments!

Reception class made the most of the icy weather by making ice ornaments. First we collected foliage in the forest. Then we chose pieces to make our ornament with, we put them in our dishes and covered them with water. We put in a piece of string. Then we left them over night.

In the morning they were frozen solid, we hung them on our tree. They looked beautiful!

Reception's Nativity Play!

Reception listen to the story of the Nativity. We then wrote a script, chose our parts and performed our own Nativity! We were very brave and performed in front of the rest of the school and our families.

Reception wore odd socks for Odd Socks Day to celebrate our uniqueness, we are all different and special!

Reception have been learning about Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, we all made Divas to hold our candles
